You are part of a mastermind group. You’re prepared to take notes and contribute. Then it’s your turn in The Hot Seat. You immediately think…
What is The Hot Seat and how do I get prepare for it?
Having 10 brilliant entrepreneurial minds focused on your travel business success is incredibly powerful, but most of us don’t get to take advantage of it.
I remember when I took part in my first mastermind. I sat in The Hot Seat for 45 minutes. I sat in the chair and shared what was on my mind. It was powerful. I rebranded my travel business, let go of my partner, and decided to niche to groups only. That was in 2012. Since then, I have taken part in 7 masterminds and led 2 myself.
I have a process I use to prepare for my time in The Hot Seat so I receive information I can use to take my travel business to the next level, whatever that is at the time.
Travel entrepreneurs’ inability to notice distraction and let go of dysfunction is in the top 5 reasons 80% of businesses fail in the first 18 months. Mastermind groups and mentors are very helpful when it comes to detecting distraction and dysfunction for you.
What is a Hot Seat?
For most, the thought of a hot seat can fill them with fear. But a hot seat is simply dedicated time during a mastermind meeting for the group to focus on your business. During your time, you get to share the good, the bad, and the ugly about what’s going on with you, your brand, and your business.
The Hot Seat – Prepare to Share
The best way to make the most of the collective brilliance of your mastermind group and leader is to prepare, of course.
I have to laugh as I write this because I went through 3 of them before it ever occurred to me to think through this, so I can strategically share with my group.
Create time to gather your thoughts before your hot seat. Following are the questions I use to guide my thoughts:
What could you use help with?
What has been working well in your business?
What has not been working well in your business?
Where have you struggled and succeeded in your business?
What have you tried, what has worked, what hasn’t?
What are you hoping to receive to move forward in your business?

Share About You, Your Brand, and Your Business
If this is your first time in The Hot Seat, share about you, your brand, and your business.
What do you do?
How do you make money?

Share Where You Struggle Most
Again, to make the most of the collective brilliance of your mastermind group, prepare to share where you struggle in your business. You may not have the perspective to see why something is not working, but your mastermind group can gain amazing perspective through what you share.

Share the Numbers
I know The Numbers are a very personal thing, but you need to let that go. If you truly want your mastermind to be of service to you, you must come with all you’ve got.
How many people are on your email marketing list?
How many clients do you have? How many do you want?
How much revenue do you generate? How much do you want to generate?
Share the traffic to your website and landing pages, and your sales numbers. If you’re using ads, share your conversion rates and cost per click. Share your reach and marketing strategy.
The Numbers that significantly impact your business and your marketing strategies are important to share so your mastermind members have context as you share your aspirations.
Share What Is Next
It is critically important to have a path you want to follow at the end of The Hot Seat. If you have several ideas or paths you can take, but not sure which one will take you closer to the success you desire in your business, share your options with your mastermind members.
Before your time in The Hot Seat, write your ideas and the paths you can take. Filter them for your top 3 to 5 options, then share those with your mastermind.
