Stress Awareness Month takes place every April in the US.  During this time, teams of experts seek to increase awareness about stress, the causes, negative effects, and how to relieve stress.

When I was searching for help during The Illness, as I share in my book, all I found was awareness, the causes, and negative effects of what I was going through.  However, there weren’t many resources on HOW to move forward. I wanted to know how to heal from the chronic effects of stress, so I could feel alive again. I already knew what it was, what caused it, and I was living the negative effect of it.

This is exactly why I created the Wellbeing Messenger Lifestyle Blog, wrote Be a Spiritual Girl in a Material World, issue a weekly newsletter, and speak where ever I can about achieving and maintaining our wellbeing.

What Is Stress

If we want to live longer, better and happier, we must find a way to cope with stress.  Face it head-on and deal with what’s causing the stress. However, it’s important to note, all stress is not bad.

Eustress is the type of stress we feel when we’re excited. This is the kind of stress we feel on a roller coaster when we’re working on a meaningful project, going on a first date, or waiting for that first kiss.

Acute stress triggers aren’t always good. It comes from surprises that require a response. Acute stress does not take a toll if we deal with it head on and return to a “stress-free” state.

Chronic stress is the type of stress we need to worry about.  Chronic stress is when we face stressors that take a toll and feel inescapable, repeatedly (experts say 90 days or more). A stressful job or an unhappy home life can bring on chronic stress.

How Bad is Stress

They don’t call Stress, the Silent Killer for nothing.  Stress can be deadly, and its effects are not immediately apparent. Left ignored they can lead to serious health issues, like heart disease and high blood pressure.

Our bodies are not designed to live with chronic levels of stress, and because of that when we live in a way that does not honor the essence of who we are, we become susceptible to dis-ease.

Stress in and of itself is not the issue.  The issue is we need to let go of the things that stress us out or change the way we feel about them. One of my favorite Maya Angelou quotes speaks to this.  It is, “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you feel about it.”

The truth is we control the amount of stress we allow to invade our bodies. If something is your life is stressing you and making you unhappy, change it.  If you can’t, then change the way you feel about it.  This doesn’t happen quickly, but it does happen.  Click here for more on changing the way you feel about things that I think will be of service to you
